Inventory and Bags

Your storage has four parts:

  • Backpack: 20 slots to begin with.
  • Toolbar: 14 slots above the backpack for equipped tools, weapons and armor.
  • Hot bar: up to 4 pinned items beside it, for quick use.
  • Bags: items that occupy one backpack slot and open up into 9 or 16 slots of their own, restricted to certain item types.

Toolbar rules

Equipping something moves it to the toolbar, where each item type gets one slot: equip another axe and the old one drops back into your backpack. Every toolbar item contributes its bonus to mastery, which caps each branch at two tools, say an axe plus a pickaxe for Building (Mastery has details). During a battle your sword, bow and armor are locked in place.

Bags

Since a bag itself uses a backpack slot, the net gain is 8 slots for a 9-slot bag and 15 for a 16-slot one. Each type of bag has a whitelist, and bags can’t be nested. There’s no in-game text saying what a bag accepts, but opening one greys out everything in your backpack that won’t fit.

Bag Holds Size Where to buy Cost
Food bag Anything edible or drinkable, crops included 9 Baker, Tavern, Brewery 5 silver
Fisherman’s bag Fish, bait 9 Fish Stand 5 silver
Potion bag The four kinds of battle potion 9 Alchemist 5 silver
Tool bag Tools, weapons, armor 9 Jeweler, Smithy 5 silver
Universal bag Nearly anything 9 Tailor 10 silver
Alchemist’s bag Alchemy ingredients and products 16 Apothecary 10 silver
Farmer’s bag Seeds, crops, fertilizer 16 Vegetable Stand 10 silver
Builder’s bag Building materials, kits 16 Furniture Maker, Builder 15 silver
Big universal bag Nearly anything 16 Tailor, tier II and up 50 silver

Where new items land

  1. In a bag that already has that item, provided there’s space.
  2. Failing that, in the backpack proper.
  3. In any suitable bag, but only once the backpack is full.

In other words, bags don’t sort for you out of the box. Drop one of an item in manually, and afterwards new copies of it head there first. With a bag open there’s also a button that pulls in every stack of anything the bag already contains.

Bag contents are treated as carried. Quests, recipes, construction and traders can all reach into bags, and you can eat food or drink potions straight out of one.

Extra slots

Apart from bags, the Deep Pockets talent gives the backpack 5 more slots.

Carrying big items

Logs, stone blocks, marble, bodies and supply boxes won’t fit in the backpack. You hold them above your head, one at a time unless a talent raises the limit. Grab another when you’re already at the limit and the one you’re holding falls to the ground.

Notes

  • Destroying a bag wipes its contents too, with no confirmation prompt. Empty it beforehand.
  • Nothing can be dropped on the ground. Getting rid of an item means destroying it, storing it in a chest or workbench, selling it or using it.
  • Items on the ground stay forever, bodies being the one exception (see Corpses and organs). With a full backpack, anything you craft or receive is left on the ground next to you.
  • Traders won’t buy bags back, and a shop only holds one bag at a time, restocking after the shopkeeper has saved up enough.
  • Star grades don’t stack. Two grades of the same item always take separate slots.
