The Old Mine
Tunnelled beneath the forest between the Quarry and the Factory, the Old Mine carries a warning sign about explosive traps, left by the forest’s old bandits, who admit they simply forgot to remove it. There’s no danger, just rockfall blocking the way. Inside you’ll find a chest, four marble deposits, and a spot for a zombie miner, your long-term source of iron ore and coal.
Entrances
| Entrance | How to open it |
|---|---|
| Quarry side | The caved-in entrance at the back of the Quarry can be blasted only after you’ve met the bandits Hans and Sven. It takes one Dynamite, which they hand over once Larry has persuaded them (Quarry has the details). |
| Factory side | The blockage at the south end of the factory hall: 4 Building Kits I and a Reinforced Beam, with Building 8. Clearing it also counts as discovering the Factory. |
Enter from the factory and you’ll find the mine’s surface exit still buried (“I should try from the other side”); it only clears once the Quarry cave has been blasted.
What’s inside
- A chest with 2 Reanimation Liquids, an Inquisitor’s Note II and 2 Explosive Dust. That dust is exactly enough for another Dynamite, combined with alcohol at a Formulation Bench once you have the Dynamite technology.
- Four marble deposits, each giving 4 Marble and 2 red tech points to a pickaxe at Building 4. They don’t regrow.
- A Zombie Miner spot, covered below.
Zombie Miner
Zombie Mining unlocks the Zombie Miner and the mine’s Porter Station. It’s one of six zombie-gathering technologies that remain hidden on the tree until both mine entrances are open, the cave blasted and the factory blockage cleared. The other five cover the lumberjack (Sawmill) and the stone, marble, and sand-and-clay workers.
Station a pickaxe-wielding zombie at the miner. Every round produces 1 Iron Ore, 2 Coal and a red tech point, then restarts by itself. Output lands directly in the mine’s storage, so no supplier zombie is required, and the Magpie’s Eye perk adds a chance of a Gem. The Porter Station hauls ore and coal off to the factory.

Notes
- There are no traps. The sign by the cave is just the bandits’ bluff; nothing inside goes off.
- Clear both ends to unlock the zombie jobs. Either entrance gets you into the mine, but the miner, lumberjack and quarry technologies stay hidden until the second is open.
- Give the miner an Iron Pickaxe. Zombies have no mastery of their own, so the tool sets their pace: a round takes roughly 80 seconds of digging with a Rusty Pickaxe, 40 with Bronze and about 11 with Iron. Steel is a touch slower than iron at about 12. Walking time is extra. These figures are calculated from the game files, not timed in play.
