Graveyard

Bodies the donkey delivers end up in the graveyard. Each grave earns a quality score from the body’s skulls plus the gravestone and fence on top, and the graveyard’s quality is everything inside its Grave Areas added up. Higher graveyard quality boosts the money from a successful sermon, and Grave Expectations requires 10.

Step by step

  1. Place the grave. From the graveyard’s blueprint table, put an Empty Grave on a grave spot inside a Grave Area. It’s free.
  2. Dig it out with a shovel.
  3. Lower the body. Carry it overhead to the pit and interact.
  4. Fill the grave with the shovel. The Burial Certificate pops out beside it.
  5. Decorate. Open the grave and fit a gravestone in the top slot and a fence in the bottom slot, both from your backpack.

Both digging and filling pay 2 red tech points, and each filled grave advances the Last Respects inspiration.

Scoring a grave

A body’s white skulls (good) and red skulls (bad) come from its organs and pocket items combined. The grave’s score works like this:

Part Effect
Gravestone and fence Their quality values are added.
Red skulls Minus one each; the result can be negative.
White skulls A cap: the grave can never score higher than this, however fine the decorations.
The formula

Grave quality = min(gravestone + fence − red skulls, white skulls).

Take a body carrying 3 red and 3 white skulls. Topped with a Wooden Cross I (2) and a Wooden Fence I (1), its grave comes to 2 + 1 − 3 = 0. Pull the fat and blood from its pockets beforehand, at 1 red skull each, and that grave scores 2 instead.

The way to push a score up is to cut the body’s red skulls on the autopsy table before burial. The pockets are the simple win: Fat and Blood are one red skull each, and Flesh is one white skull, so the flesh stays.

Decorations

There are thirteen decorations across four materials. Each grave holds one headstone and one fence, and its decoration score is their sum:

Technology Top score Headstone (quality) Fence (quality) Price
Wooden Sign 1 Wooden Sign (1) — 0; the story gives it
Wooden Gravestones I 3 Wooden Cross I (2) Wooden Fence I (1) 5 red, 2 green
Wooden Gravestones II 5 Wooden Cross II (3) Wooden Fence II (2) 20 red, 5 blue
Stone Gravestones I 7 Gravestone I (4) Stone Fence I (3) 50 red, 10 blue
Stone Gravestones II 9 Gravestone II (5) Stone Fence II (4) 100 red, 30 blue
Marble Gravestones I 11 Marble Cross I (6) Marble Fence I (5) 200 red, 50 blue
Marble Gravestones II 14 Marble Cross II (7) Marble Fence II (7) 300 red, 100 blue

That means 3 is the ceiling for any grave before the stone tier, and the story’s early graveyard targets are set with that in mind. Stone Gravestones I additionally requires 25 reputation with the Nun, and every higher tier branches off it.

The graveyard total

Only things inside a graveyard area are counted. One Grave Area I comes pre-built and is locked in place until your first grave has its sign. You may build one more of that type, and technologies unlock ten further area types with different spot layouts (Grave Area I has the comparison). Inside an area:

  • Graves add their quality.
  • Open pits and graves with an unburied body are worth −3.
  • Exterior benches sit on a Grave Area’s bench spots; an Exterior Bench I is worth 3.

Whenever graveyard quality sets a new record, the increase counts toward the graveyard quality inspiration. Demolishing and rebuilding won’t count again.

Alternatives to burial

Method Adds to graveyard Certificate? Other output Tech points
Burial Its grave’s quality Yes Progress on Last Respects 2 red when digging plus 2 when filling
Crematorium I Nothing Yes 5 Ash and 1 Salt 1 red, 2 blue
The river Nothing No None None

You get the crematorium from Body Places I; it goes in the morgue. Whatever is left inside the body is burned along with it. The river accepts bodies at just two fixed points near the graveyard.

Leave a body lying on the ground and it vanishes on its own after 75 real minutes out of view, roughly 10 in-game days, with no reward.

Digging a body back up

Take off the gravestone and fence first, then choose Exhume in the grave window. It consumes an Exhumation Certificate, sold by Januarius.

Notes

  • Finish graves quickly. Every open pit or unfilled grave drags graveyard quality down by 3 until it’s done.
  • Higher-tier bodies aren’t easier. They bring more white skulls but more red ones too.
  • Cremation isn’t a burial as far as the 50-burials achievement is concerned, and it contributes nothing to the graveyard.
  • Decorating counts as Building work. Wooden decorations need Building mastery 1, so keep an axe or pickaxe on the toolbar (Mastery explains).
  • Filled graves are permanent. Only an empty pit can be removed.
