The Donkey

Your corpses arrive courtesy of the donkey, a talking animal who calls himself “a respectable, distinguished, magical animal!” and hates the work, though he likes it better than ending up as lunch meat. He brings your first body during the introduction and runs a regular schedule from Certificate, Please onward. You can’t trade with him or ask him anything; unless the story gives him lines, Leave is the only option when you talk to him.

When and where

Schedule Every other day at 13:12, which always lands on Gluttony, Lust and Pride (Time and the Week)
Signal His bell rings when he arrives
Load One corpse per visit to begin with

With the morgue door broken, bodies are left outside at the Corpse Dumping Point. Once it’s fixed, he uses a free Corpse Pallet if one exists and the morgue floor if not. Fixing the door requires an Iron Detail, which is some way off (The Morgue), so for a long time every body lands outside.

Some visits don’t happen. He stays away if the morgue is full, and even with space, his delivery chance falls after each delivery and climbs after each miss; Corpses gives the figures.

When Agatha the Nun moves out of the tavern, the donkey’s following visit ends with him loitering at the morgue to grumble about her. He delivers nothing more until you’ve listened.

On strike

Summon the fairy and the donkey walks off the job. On his next visit he waits at the morgue empty-handed: Agatha has decreed that the dead stay with her at the Crossroads, and he won’t go near her. Ask him about zombies (the fairy mentioned he knows how to raise them) and he owns up to having a book, then offers a deal: fix his problem and it’s yours.

Agatha delivers the corpses herself for the duration. What she demands before letting him back (a better graveyard and her sacred well repaired) is on her page. Afterwards, tell the donkey he can return (The Ingenious Gentleman Don Keyote), on condition that he washes his hooves before each pick-up and stops relieving himself at the Crossroads. Deliveries start up again.

The Necronomicon

At this point he confesses the book isn’t actually his. He suspects the Poet has it, the man now going by Gunter and working as an astrologer. Ask Gunter about the Necronomicon at 20 reputation; he’s too occupied with your PR campaign to search. Ask again at 30 and he digs it out from under his bed. You receive the Necronomicon, 10 reputation with Gunter, a Story and the Forbidden Knowledge achievement, and the Reanimation Liquid technology shows up on the tree. Gunter mentions that he sells the stones for zombie collars too.

Other chats

Four more times the donkey shows up without a body and hangs about the morgue wanting to talk: shortly after the strike, after the Necronomicon, when town quality hits 50, and after the election when it hits 100. He complains about the town’s traders, shares a drink with Larry, and hints at “a dark hat and a red eye”. Each time, deliveries pause until you’ve spoken with him.

Quests

Notes

  • No room, no body. The morgue initially fits one body, since only the autopsy table counts; each Corpse Pallet adds one more.
  • Space frees up only when a body is buried, burned or dumped. Removing organs doesn’t count.
  • Abandoned bodies eventually vanish if left off-screen long enough. There’s no reward, but the space is freed.
