Gunter

Gunter, or “the Mysterious Guntarius” as he styles himself, lives in the port’s Astrologer’s Tower, which is attached to an enormous stone foot. On your first visit he goes pale, as though facing a ghost, because you resemble an old friend of his. He sells the Comet’s Tail for the fairy summoning, gives you three zombies, and ends up as your PR manager, keeping the town calm about your undead labour. In an earlier life he wrote poetry, and a pen name lets him keep doing so.

Friendship Written in the Stars

After crossing into the port, visit his tower (Friendship Written in the Stars). There are three topics to raise:

Topic What he says
The comet’s tail On sale, at a “guild discount” since you’re a fellow astrologer; Chasing Fairy Lights can’t be done without it.
Zombies Albert’s zombies used to be his (“borrowed”), and he has three more for you if you do him a small favour. The stinking Zombie goo they left behind is in his shop too.
The favour He walked out of the Dockside Club without paying, leaving his tarot cards behind. Retrieve them from Linda, who first wants the town’s old shop reopened.

Deliver the Deck of Cards; he rewards you with 10 reputation, one Town Gratitude and a Story. That reputation earns you the zombies. He refuses to be seen marching zombies out of his tower, so he has them at your home by morning; step outside your house to find them. The next time you leave his tower, his store reaches tier two.

Congregation Trouble

Those three zombies count against your zombie limit. Following your next sermon, Gunter whispers to you in the church: attendance fell, and he knows the reason. Guards on the wall have been watching zombies tend your grounds, and panic is spreading. Before he took up prophecy he was the kingdom’s finest writer, so he volunteers as your PR man, “because Panic Reduction is what you need”. A talk in his tower then lifts his store to tier three.

  1. Charge a hypno-device. Purchase a Hypno-device (tier-three stock), put 1 Faith into it at a Formulation Bench using the recipe the quest provides, and give him the Charged hypno-device.
  2. Hold a sermon. Afterwards you get 10 reputation. The devices aren’t very effective on people, he confesses, but combined with newspapers they do help. The PR Machine goes up next to his port house, and Gluttony day, its only working day, gets marked on your calendar.

Poems, a contract and a book

  • Rhyme and Printed. Put up a Printing Press (from the Newspaper technology) and print his verse as Printed Poetry: one Blank Softcover Notebook, two Ink, one 3-star Story. “Vagner”, his pen name, goes on the cover. Rewards: 10 reputation, one Town Gratitude, one Story. He then replaces you as the campaign’s face, since you’re “too controversial”, and wants Jack instead, handing you the PR Agreement for Jack to sign.
  • Stars, Lies, & Contracts. Jack will sign only after his workshop is rebuilt and he’s at 60 reputation. Bring the Signed PR Agreement back to Gunter; that’s 10 more reputation plus one Town Gratitude. He admits he’s always both craved attention and dreaded it, and hopes Jack’s confidence will rub off on him.
  • The Necronomicon. The donkey points you to Gunter for the book. At 20 reputation he’s too busy with your PR; at 30 he finds it under his bed, worth 10 reputation.

In the village election, Destiny Polls has you ask him to run the candidates’ campaign. Asking takes 45 reputation and convincing him 50; he comes round once you mention that Jack is backing one of the twins. Fifty is precisely what his five pre-election quests add up to (cards, hypno sermon, poetry, agreement, Necronomicon).

The portal

Any Portal in a Storm starts with Larry and ends with you quizzing Gunter about the magic portal. He panics, since even as “just a side character” last time he got into trouble, and sends you to the one who switched it on, today a monk at the foundry beneath the bathhouse. That’s the Bishop, whose magic mirror reveals that Gunter holds the second fragment.

The Hungry Cosmos has him hand over the Gluttony fragment, for 10 reputation, and unseal the portal frame upstairs, which is where you’ll install each fragment from now on. A third one was his too until he needed cash and sold it; it left aboard a merchant vessel. You can buy it back from the Trademaster at the Main Pier on Lust day, the day that ship is in port, for 1 gold. It’s the Lust fragment; once it’s installed, Gunter’s reputation rises by 10. He has one more request: use a wish to put the weekdays back in their proper order, a mess nobody but him has noticed.

Gunter and Jack at the end

Why don’t you like me? sets the PR campaign’s goal at 100 happiness. Town quality caps happiness, so the town must reach 100 first; he only checks the figure, and it’s worth 10 reputation. He’s been a poet, a magical beast, an astrologer and a PR strategist, but his favourite part was doing something big together with friends, and what he wants now is to help Jack.

Once Jack has handed over his fragment as well, the following morning I Love You, Man finds the pair at the Main Pier rebuilding the colossus. Gunter’s present is a Small Printing Press for printing verse and colossus news, made at a steel anvil (two Engineering Details, one Steel Screws); it earns 10 reputation and three Town Gratitude. Jack gets a Prosthetic Hand instead, as described on his page.

For the portal itself, Gluttony and Pride asks Gunter and Jack as a pair: 90 reputation with each if the Old God got his eye back, 100 if you kept it. On the dark path alone, handing Jack the Elegant Prosthetic Hand supplies Gunter’s last 10.
