Jack

Jack is the town’s Workshop Foreman and resident inventor, and he’s the one who kits you out for the town’s defence. When that defence collapses, his workshop ends up stranded in zombie territory, and he spends the opening chapters looking for somewhere to work again. In the opening, his only quest is Jack in a Boat. Everything else begins at the port: recapturing his workshop, rebuilding it, and a chain of engineering puzzles that steers you toward the Royal Foundry and your own factory.

Gearing up for the defence

Mid-defence, Herbert sends you to Jack’s workshop for armour and a sword. Jack produces them on his conveyor belts, and they pop out into the chest at the end of the line. Equip both to your hotbar before leaving: the story advances only when you walk out wearing them, and if they’re sitting in your backpack Larry simply tells you to put them on.

Jack in a Boat

Once you’ve met Herm, Jack appears in your house one night. He needs a boat to reach a stronghold at the port, and he points out that the armour wasn’t a gift. There are three parts:

Part What he wants Reward
Planks 5 Wooden Planks, delivered in Twins’ Land 10 reputation
Tools 5 Bronze Details, forged at an anvil from bronze ingots once you have Bronze Craft Blacksmith’s Clothes
Rowers The twins, who’ll only row if someone they trust asks: speak to them at village reputation 10 Needed to finish

Tools and rowers can be done in either order. With both complete, ask Jack if he’s ready for a further 10 reputation, a Town Gratitude and a Story. He leaves the next time you sleep.

Village reputation 10 takes two of the +5 quests; the earliest available are Herm’s Planted and Delivered and the twins’ own Two Peas in a Pod.

After he sails, sleep once more and a letter from Jack arrives. It’s this second wake-up that unlocks the Magic bell recipe Herbert needs, so his Swords and Bell can’t be completed until the boat has gone. The same morning brings the Nun to the village tavern.

At the port

After the first battle, step onto the bridge to the port. Jack yells from the far bank and lowers it: Docked and Found, worth 10 reputation with him and 10 town quality. He mentions that the Astrologer lives in a tower “attached to a… foot”, then rushes off to check what’s left in the town warehouse, where the Trademaster blocks him: it’s Town property, and it’s empty anyway.

His first request is Workshop Hours: iron for the town. Take his Supply: Iron order from the warehouse order board, place one crate on a pallet there, and report once the order completes. Orders can only be picked up on Pride day and pallets are tallied the next Pride-day morning (Orders), so budget a week at least. You make the crate at a woodworking bench from 6 Iron Ingots, 4 Boards and 8 Bronze Nails. Rewards: 10 reputation, a Town Gratitude, three renewable orders from him on the board, and access to the Market Square Purge battle.

This quest also lifts him to 40 reputation, unlocking the Circular Saw. Its beams are needed for every route into the factory beneath your house, so the basement waits on this order.

Rebuilding the workshop

Win the Market Square fight and the door to Jack’s workshop in town reopens. Step inside to complete Jack’s Back in Business: 10 reputation, 2 Town Gratitude and a Story. The zombies have trashed it, and he can’t rebuild a workshop without having a workshop, so he gives you a list and tells you to use his blueprints and the old Inquisitor workshop under your base. No real blueprints exist and nothing gets unlocked.

Give materials wants 5 Building Kit I and 5 Wooden Kit I, in any order. Deliver both and the workshop is restored, a block of town houses is repaired along with it, and Jack declares you his apprentice: 10 reputation and 2 Town Gratitude.

Jack’s Back in Business brings him to 50, which unlocks Conveyors. Around then, Gunter the Astrologer wants Jack as the face of his Restore the Town campaign. Jack’s keen but won’t sign without a proper workshop; with the materials in and 60 reputation reached, he signs the PR Agreement.

Steel and the factory

After the election, Front-of-the-Envelope Calculation (60 reputation) has Jack unveil his industrialisation plan. His sums say restoring the town will take 25 years. Two obstacles: nobody left wants factory work, and no steel equals what the Royal Foundry used to produce, though he’s lately seen smoke rising from it. The only route is a flooded water tunnel, reachable only if the ship lock is drained, which is Herbert’s next battle.

Quest What happens Reward
Man of Steel A bishop and his monks run the foundry under the bathhouse. Ask the Bishop about steel and he sells Steel Ingots. Take Jack 3: he tests one, pronounces it better than ever, and can’t believe monks made it 10 reputation, 3 Town Gratitude
Factory Tour Jack wants to see the factory you’ve mentioned. Get its quality to 20 and invite him; he’s astonished, and a bit deflated 10 reputation

Man of Steel pushes him to 70, which unlocks Steel Smithing.

His portal fragment

Years ago Gunter gave Jack a stone “charged with luck”, which is in fact a portal fragment. More Portal Parts opens once the Lust fragment is in the portal. You can raise it at 60 reputation, but he won’t hand it over until you’ve helped with his project, which means 80, every one of his quests through the Factory Tour. He then gives you the Pride fragment.

When Gunter’s story has caught up too, your next wake-up triggers I Love You, Man, sending you to the pair by the Main Pier, where they’ve begun rebuilding the colossus together (achievement Two Broken Souls). You bring a gift for each:

For the portal, Gluttony and Pride asks Jack and Gunter jointly: 90 reputation each if you gave the Old God his eye back, 100 if you kept it. Jack’s final 10 exist only on the dark path, via an Elegant Prosthetic Hand (2 Engineering Details, 2 Steel Screws, 2 Special Wood), which gives Gunter 10 too.

Reputation

Total Added by Unlocks
20 Jack in a Boat (two payouts) Nothing
30 Docked and Found Nothing
40 Workshop Hours Circular Saw
50 Jack’s Back in Business Conveyors
60 Give materials PR Agreement, his calculations, asking about the fragment
70 Man of Steel Steel Smithing
80 Factory Tour The Pride fragment
90 Prosthetic Hand Portal help with the eye returned
100 Elegant Prosthetic Hand Portal help with the eye kept

Each row is exactly one quest, and nothing else awards his reputation, so the table doubles as the order you’ll earn it.

Quests

Notes

  • No trading at first. His orders only appear after the port’s supply-run quest, when he posts three renewable ones.
  • Hand-ins come from the backpack. Planks or details on your hotbar aren’t counted.
  • His reputation guards much of the tree. 40 unlocks the circular saw, 50 the entire conveyor line, 70 steel; the opening only gets you to 20.
  • Bronze Details drive the opening. Beyond Jack’s boat they’re needed for the four church blockages (one each), graveyard benches, the power switch, and the Reinforced Planks for Herbert’s barricades (two per plank). Herm’s Bronze Scrap is the fast route to bronze ingots.
