Agatha

Agatha, the Nun, reaches the village once Jack has sailed, and she’s the person who brings the church back into service. Her opening quest unlocks the Theology tab of the tech tree and finishes with your first sermon, making her your route to Faith. She lives at the Crossroads, not far from Herbert. Later she takes charge of your corpse supply, sends better bodies as you improve her house, and finally shares that house with Herbert.

Holy Moly!

1. Find her at the tavern. Following Jack’s letter, visit the Village Tavern. Speaking to her grants the Church Cleaning technology at no cost, after which she heads to the church.
2. Get the church to quality 10. It’s cluttered with rubble and broken pots at −2 each, so it starts well below zero. Clear them, then add furniture such as Interior Bench I at +3 apiece. Tell her Everything’s ready to receive a Basic Prayer, a Town Gratitude and the Writing Basic technology.
3. Hold your first sermon at the lectern. This one is allowed on the same day, whichever weekday it is. You then get 10 reputation with her, another Town Gratitude, a Story and Priest’s Clothes, and Wrath day, sermon day, appears on the day indicator from then on.

The donkey’s strike

Summon the fairy and the donkey stops his deliveries. The Nun, he says, has decreed in the Church’s name that the dead stay with her for a while; he calls her a dreadful woman who hates donkeys. For the duration, Agatha supplies the corpses: on the donkey’s normal days she may leave one, with the same odds he’d have, and it never goes onto a Corpse Pallet.

The Nun with the Hairy Ass has you raise the matter with her (10 reputation required). To her the donkey is an Emissary of Darkness from her visions, and she has two grievances:

With both settled, ask her about Corpse Delivery. She lets the donkey return to work, and you gain the option to set a corpse count with her: No corpses, A few corpses or Lots of corpses, available on Wrath day only (Time and the Week). Tell the donkey he’s welcome back and deliveries resume.

Lots of corpses lets the donkey carry up to two per visit. No corpses halts both him and her until you pick a different answer. The figures are on Corpses.

Better corpses

After deliveries restart, Brawns and Brains lets you request better corpses. She’s willing to pray harder over them before they reach you, just not while living in her current conditions.

The fourth tier, the top one any quest grants, arrives later with The House at the Crossroads. Each step sets the tier outright rather than adding to it.

Higher tiers bring higher certificates, Burial Certificate II at tier two and III at tier three. They also bring more skulls of both kinds, so a better tier doesn’t automatically mean an easier good burial.

The Nun Also Reads

Herbert can’t read, and he’d like someone to read a romance novel to him. Ask Agatha on his behalf in The Nun Also Reads (20 reputation) and she says no, unless your church gets a proper choir. Decent singers are gone, she complains; they’re all dead.

1. Build a Choir in the church, from Church Music I, which sits behind Church Carpets and her 30 reputation node.
2. Tell her it’s ready. She’s sworn never to leave the Crossroads, so you give her permission as a priest.
3. Hold a sermon with the choir. She then agrees to read to Herbert. You receive 10 reputation and 2 Town Gratitude, and Herbert’s next quest unlocks.

The organ and the house

Once the election’s done, Notorious Nun finds her troubled about her reputation. Everyone dreads her temper, which is how she copes, but Herbert is gentle with her and she enjoys reading to him. She wants the church organ restored, hoping its thunder will stir his righteous fury, and asks you to keep it secret. Simply listening earns 10 reputation. The organ needs special wood from the carvers at the Stilt Houses on the western lake, and getting there means Herbert’s lake battle.

• See You in Church. Bring church quality to 50 and tell her, for 10 reputation.
• The Organ. Unlocked by Church Music II (150 red, 100 blue tech points), which sits behind Church Illumination and her 50 reputation node. Harold the woodcarver sells the Special Wood once his machine is fixed. After building it, tell both Agatha and Herbert for 3 Town Gratitude each; Herbert had asked for the very same organ as a surprise for her.
• The House at the Crossroads. With the church and organ done, she has one more request: a real house, so Herbert can leave his post and live with her. Bring 2 Wooden Kit II and 2 Furniture Kit II. The corpse tier goes to its maximum and Agatha’s Guest gets its final level. The Brawns and Brains upgrades must be done beforehand.

When the house is finished and Herbert knows about the organ, A Good Example is the Best Sermon calls for an organ sermon for the pair of them. The music drains Herbert’s anger, and her memories of her sisters soften into a quiet sadness. Each gains 10 reputation, you get a Story and the An Unlikely Pair achievement, and after Herbert’s armour quest he moves in with her. Because her reputation only ever moves in tens, the 25 node effectively unlocks at 30. The middle rows can come in a different order, but the totals are fixed, since these ten quests are her only sources.
