Herm
The village store belongs to Herm, the second trader you’ll meet after Januarius at the tavern. He stocks seeds and Bronze Scrap, and he’s among the first to reward you with happiness for goods you sell.
To begin with, his shelves hold only Wheat seed and Bronze Scrap. The scrap matters early: three smelt into two bronze ingots at a furnace, and one becomes six bronze nails at an anvil. Until the town opens, Herm is the only trader selling it; otherwise you’re smashing junk to find it.
Store tiers
| Tier | How | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Two | Planted and Delivered: bring 5 wheat | Stock gains vegetables, more seed types, eggs and river fish fillets; he starts buying planks, clay plates and bricks. You also get +5 village reputation and a Town Gratitude. |
The quest text recommends buying 16–20 wheat seeds, but the check only looks at the 5 wheat.
Tier three arrives with The Frill of the Chase, bringing fruit seedlings, grape seeds, flax thread and milk.
The Quiet Art
After the twins give you a fishing rod, Herm wants a roach and a gudgeon, one of each, in The Quiet Art. You receive two Town Gratitude and learn to cook river fish.
Happiness for goods
Some of what you sell Herm earns happiness; the table below shows which items, each one’s value and weekly limit, and his weekly cap. On tier one only river fish fillets qualify, with a cap of 2 happiness per week. Tier two brings vegetables into it and lifts the cap to 15.
Values accumulate in fractions, and a point is only awarded when the running total crosses a whole number. Sell one vegetable (1/15 happiness) and you’ll see nothing until enough have gone through. His weekly count resets every Pride day and whenever his store is upgraded.
Shop
Stock is how many the trader keeps on hand; prices rise as it runs low. See Traders for how prices work.

Quests
Notes
- Seeds sell in lots of 4 or more. With fewer than 4 in stock, you can’t buy until he restocks.
- Only listed goods are accepted. Everything else in your backpack is greyed out while trading.
- His purse is small. He begins with 15 silver and earns 1 silver per day at tier one, so he can’t cover a sale bigger than that.
- Prices track his stock. Scarce items cost more, and the more you’ve already sold him, the less he offers. Stock creeps back toward normal every day.
- Trading doesn’t earn village reputation, whatever he claims in Planted and Delivered. Only quests and, later, building the town’s trader shops raise it (Reputation).
- Town quality caps all happiness, and it sits at 10 until the port opens. At the cap, Herm’s happiness is wasted.
