Albert

Albert, the Plague Doctor, is dismissed by Jully as “that excuse of a man” and said to be cursed, yet he alone knows how to make the Dream Dust a fairy summoning requires. He introduces you to alchemy and hands you your first two zombies. In time you discover why he studies the undead: his own sister is one. Linda, owner of the Dockside Club, falls for him, and his worsening cough becomes her concern as well.

Reaching him

Once Good Fellow is done, Larry directs you to the locked hatch in your house, and the route to Albert leads through the dungeon beneath it:

  1. Clear the dungeon. Climb down the hatch and you hit a blockage that takes 3 Bronze Details and 3 Wooden Planks to clear. Past it are footprints and a Secret combination.
  2. Open the tower bars. The combination plus the Inquisitor’s medallion, picked up in the prison at the start of the game, unlock the way into the Abandoned Tower, adding 5 village reputation.
  3. Let him in. Inside, open the hatch for Albert and ask how Dream Dust is made. You get the Alchemy, Basic technology, 10 reputation, and use of the tower laboratory.

Sweet Dreams

Brew one Dream Dust in the tower lab from a Water and a Blood, both waiting in the lab chest, and show it to Albert in Sweet Dreams. He only inspects it, so the Dust stays yours. Rewards: 10 more reputation, a Story and Alchemist’s Clothes.

Next, follow him down the hatch in the laboratory to his home, where two zombies are shuffling about (“Peaceful, but useless. Although they’re good for dumb labor.”). He gives them to you, and they’re your first zombie workers, well before you can raise any yourself.

He also names the fairy’s final ingredient: a feather from a comet’s tail, which the astrologer in the port sells. The port only opens after the first battle, so Chasing Fairy Lights has to wait until then.

The violin for Linda

Linda, who runs the Dockside Club at the port, wants to give a concert on Albert’s sister’s violin, and she sends you to ask him for it. He insists on varnishing it first. Varnish Before You Fiddle grants the Lacquer technology when it begins; the Lacquer itself comes from alchemy. Bring him one. It turns out he’s already varnished the violin and thinks little of your lacquer, but he keeps it anyway and gives you the Violin, plus 10 reputation. He promises to attend.

And he does. The concert can only begin on Lust day. Afterwards Albert’s reputation rises by 10, and you receive 2 Town Gratitude, a Story and the A Night to Remember achievement.

Aleksta

Post-concert, Personal Zombie Zone catches him on a side project: curing the dead rather than raising them, turning a zombie back into a person. For that he needs a clever, capable zombie with 8 red skulls, laid on the examination table in his lab, and in exchange he vows to share all his alchemical knowledge.

As the quest opens he supplies 2 Golden Zombie Collars and 2 Reanimation Liquids, and you’ll need them, since a Bronze Zombie Collar caps at 5 red skulls while a golden one allows 10. Raise the zombie (Zombies explains how), carry it to the table and set it down; Albert keeps it. He then reveals who else lives down there: Aleksta, his sister, now a zombie. He’ll hear nothing of gods; for him it’s a disease, and he’ll find a cure. You gain 10 reputation.

Linda’s visit

After the concert Linda wants to call on Albert and needs a gift for him, a Blank Softcover Notebook (Book Broker). Then ask Albert if she may visit (Plague Me Maybe). On the first try your nerve fails and you just mumble. The second try requires 50 reputation with him; Linda comes in with the notebook and you leave the two of them alone. Sleep a night, then visit each of them for 10 reputation apiece.

Those 50 come from the Dream Dust quests, the lacquer, the concert and the 8-red-skull zombie, meaning every one of his quests so far.

The cough

Following the election, Linda raises Albert’s health with you; it’s deteriorating. Later, when the cheese trail has brought you into the sewers, Coughing it Up! lets you ask him directly. He has no plan, but for the first time he wants to live, for Linda. 10 reputation.

The remedy is a plant the refugees brought from across the sea, the Po-ta-to. The refugees settling the drained lock trade you 3 of them for 3 steel shovels, and Linda needs all three (Hot Potato Delivery). Then in Heal the Healer you tell Albert, who agrees to go to the club for treatment as long as you go with him: 10 reputation. The Linda and Albert conversations can happen in either order.

Once Linda’s last request is also complete, your next wake-up brings Love Story, which sends you to the Dockside Club, now Albert and Linda’s shared home (achievement A Dangerous Romance). Linda asks for Chocolate; Albert wants 10 Alchemy Flasks II, worth 10 reputation with him and 3 Town Gratitude. Unusually for a story gift, the flasks are a normal furnace recipe (3 Alchemy Flasks I each, unlocked by the Bellows technology) that you can batch.

Portal help

Lust and Envy asks Albert and Linda jointly to help with the portal: 90 reputation with each if you returned the Old God’s eye, 100 if you kept it. Albert’s final 10 exist only on the dark path, from Luxury Drapes sewn from 20 Lace at a sewing table. You give them to Albert, and Linda’s reputation goes up as well.

Quests

Notes

  • The Inquisitor’s medallion can’t be lost. You collect it in the prison during the introduction; it sits among your quest items, can’t be discarded and no trader will buy it, so it’s always there when the tower door asks for it.
  • Study water and blood first. Only studied ingredients go into the laboratory, and the tower chest’s 31 Science is all you’ll have for a long time. Water and blood cost 1 each.
  • His first reputation technology is automatic. It comes bundled with Alchemy, Basic, so there’s nothing to buy.
  • His reputation tops out at 20 in the opening chapters.
  • The 8-red-skull zombie is a one-way trip. Albert keeps it and it drops off your zombie count. His offer of all his alchemical knowledge amounts to just the 10 reputation.
  • Reserve the Golden Zombie Collars for his zombie. A Bronze collar can’t hold 8 red skulls.
