The Graveyard
East of your house, spread in front of the ruined temple that will become your church, lies the graveyard; the church door opens onto it. Your first burial happens here in the introduction, and it’s this graveyard’s quality that Herbert checks in Grave Expectations. Burial and quality rules are on the Graveyard mechanics page; this page is about the location.
What’s here at first
A single Grave Area I comes pre-built and can’t be removed until your first grave has its sign; only objects within a Grave Area count toward quality. The chest holds your first-burial kit (Rusty Shovel, Rusty Hammer, three Wooden Signs) and, for some reason, a piece of Cheese.
Just west of it, a teleport stone activates for 1 Faith (Milestones).
Build desk
From the graveyard build desk you can place Empty Graves, up to two Grave Areas, an Exterior Bench I on a Grave Area’s bench spots, chests, and the expansions below.
Expansions
Each expansion clears another weed-choked plot of the grounds and makes it buildable:
| Materials | Expansion |
|---|---|
| 12 Pieces of stone | Expand graveyard I |
| 12 Polished Stone | Expand graveyard II |
| 24 Polished Stone | Expand graveyard III |
Expansion I opens after Certificate, Please, and each one unlocks the next. You make Polished Stone at the Stonemason’s Workbench once you have Stone Polishing. Each expansion advances the Cemetery Expander inspiration.

Notes
- The river takes bodies at two set points: to the west of your house, and past the graveyard’s east side on the way to the Crossroads. You get nothing for it, not even a certificate (Graveyard).
- Wooden Signs are crafted, not found. The story gives you their technology after your first burial; the chest’s three are just to get you going.
- Unconfirmed: a second Grave Area likely needs an expansion first. The game files suggest each expansion opens one extra building plot, and your starting plot is already occupied by the first Grave Area. Not yet verified in play.
