Your House and Yard
Following the retreat from town, Herbert directs you to a deserted Inquisitor base west of the Crossroads, and its old house becomes your home. Most of your workstations go in the yard out front, while the garden beside it is for growing crops. The graveyard, morgue and church are all close by.
Inside the house
Sleeping in the bed for the first time unlocks the technology tree and grants your first technology free. After that the bed doubles as your save point; sleeping at home is the only regular way to save. Larry perches on the box beside it.
The kitchen needs work. Both pieces are fixed in place, and both require Building mastery 3:
| Broken piece | Fix with | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Broken Oven | 2 Pieces of stone | A working Kitchen Oven, and the First dishes technology for free: baked apples, baked mushrooms and Berry Pie |
| Broken Kitchen Table | 2 Wooden Planks | A working Kitchen Table for dough, Vegetable Salad and River fish fillet |
The house chests contain 5 berries and 8 loaves of bread.
The yard
Almost every workstation is placed from the yard build desk: Sawhorse, Chopping Spot, Woodworking Workbench I, Stonemason’s Workbench, Wooden Anvil, Furnace I, Kiln, Potter’s Wheel, Tool Rack and others. You start with none of them; each needs its technology.
The yard chest begins with 2 Boards, a Beer and 100 Water. The line of stockpiles along the yard (wood, stone, clay, sand, ore, coal, marble) is part of the conveyor system, which only arrives much later with Conveyors, so it sits unused for a long time.
The story activates the teleport stone beside the house for free, so you can always warp home (Teleport milestones).
The garden
There’s a well for water and space for Garden Beds, unlocked by Gardening. Orchardry adds an Orchard and Apple Trees, though the Orchard stays empty for a long time (see Notes).

Notes
- Your starting tools fall short of Building 3. A Rusty Axe and Rusty Pickaxe on the hotbar give 1 each; the third point must come from talents or a better tool (Mastery).
- Garden beds need green mastery. They only accept planting with a shovel or fishing rod on the hotbar, or the matching talent. Digging a fresh bed needs Farming 2, beyond what the rusty shovel alone provides.
- Many trees around the base are one-offs. Chop one down and clear the stump and the spot stays bare for good; ordinary trees leave an empty tree spot instead.
- You’ll build the Orchard well before you can use it. Apple Trees grow from an Apple Tree Seedling, sold by Herm at tier three and by the town Vegetable stall. The berry, blueberry and rhododendron bushes unlock when the Orchard is finished, not through technology. The Orchard costs 10 Peat; a Compost Pile (from Fertilizers I) turns 8 Leaves into 2 Peat, and every crop harvest drops 2 Leaves. That’s 20 harvests of leaves for an Orchard with nothing to plant in it.
